FOTOS AMAZON LODGE MALOKA – LAGO SANDOVAL
Peru trip Maloka – Parrots in Peru: Firstly, they have traveled here to study the parrots in the Tambopata Reserve. Tambopata region of Peru is the only area in the world where parrots and macaws eat clay clay cliffs, known as colpas or saladeros. There is no conclusive answer as to why birds do this, but prevailing scientific opinion suggests that clay particles help to neutralize the toxins ingested with the diet of unripe fruits and nuts. Whatever the reason, it is essential for its survival and the act of feeding itself, often comprising hundreds of birds at a time, is one of the most spectacular exhibits of the Peruvian Amazon.
As with many areas of the Amazon basin, increasing economic development is putting pressure on the natural resources of the Peruvian rainforest. Logging, agriculture and tourism are a growing threat to wildlife, particularly in this area along the Las Piedras River, east of Manu, the most important National Park in Peru. Unlike Manu and the neighboring nature reserve of the Tambopata River, the adjacent Las Piedras River system is not yet protected. But like the Tambopata, Las Piedras represents a body of water running through one of the largest expanse of virgin rainforest on the planet. It is an area considered as one of the places of the world in terms of biodiversity – the heart of the Amazon Peru.
For parrots and macaws, colpa gatherings are a social event. In groups of two or three in three, they are grouped in the treetops, chatting, playing and hanging upside down on the vine, until a large enough group has kneaded and feeding begins.
